Videos of the Carbon Piper Cub ARF 15cc 90"

This video features Ali Machinchy, the product developer, at Horizon Hobby. This is his first product-Nice choice Ali!

Hear we see the unboxing. A little slow but very detailed. I heard of some packing problems, when first shipments arrived, but Horizon seem to have changed things for the better and all boxes are now well packed! Looks like a very nice covering job with Ultrakote.

This is the official Horizon Hobby video. You can see the aerobatics that are possible as well as rough field take-offs and landing.

1/5 Scale Floats for the Carbon Piper Cub ARF

These floats are a good fit for the Carbon Piper Cub ARF. The bolt-on points are already incorporated in the ARF and you have the ability  to fly at the field in the morning and at the lake in the afternoon!

Two mini servos are used for steering. This can be expensive but far more reliable and much easier to hook up than the old way of using flexible push rods from the rudder.

  • Laser cut, all wood construction-Weight= 3.8lb (1.72 kg)
  • Fiberglass front bottom area reinforced with fiberglass
  • Covered in silver UltraCote
  • Scale like struts with painted finish
  • Internal water rudder servos and linkage
  • Gravity drop twin water rudders
  • Balance hatches in the nose, make balancing easy
  • High quality hardware is included.

Manual for the Carbon Piper Cub ARF

Hangar 9 manual for the Carbon Cub 15cc RC airplane.

Very well written, in good English. It is divided into 4 separate sections of different languages (French,German, Italian and English) that makes for many pages.

All photographs are used and this makes the assembly procedure easy to follow.

There is no table of contents, so it can take some time to find specific information.

Build Threads

RC Groups has two excellent threads for this RC airplane. Both feature notes by Ali Machinchy, the product developer at Horizon Hobbies.

One thread concentrates on the electric powered version. Click here to visit. There are 10 pages at the last count.

The other thread is mainly about the gas and glow versions, but still has information on electric power.Click here to see. You will find at least 155 pages.

Modifications and Power Module Notes

Engine Notes

Maybe the most popular question asked is-"Will this engine fit?"

The Carbon Piper Cub ARF is designed for the Evolution 15GX2. This may seem on the small side for this size of RC airplane, but a look at the videos will show that it has ample power for scale like maneuvers. It will not do 3D tricks, but it is a Cub after all!

The Evolution 20 cc engine will fit, but the cowl must be cut to clear the plug cap.

I have provided PDF files of the side and plan views of the cowl. If you download these files, you should be able to print them out full size and see if your engine of choice will fit. I have provided a few dimensions as well as a metric and inch scale. You should be able to adjust the size of the print-out to get a full size drawing. Hope this helps!

Drawing of the 15cc Evolution RC gas engine.

Here is an image of the Evolution 15. Take a look at the dimensions  to see the engine that does fit with a minimum of cut-outs.

The Evolution Pitts style muffler can also be accommodated within the cowl.

If you are using a gas engine, don't forget to plan for the electronic ignition unit! The manual shows the unit mounted above the tank.

Battery Access

The photos below show how the batteries are changed. The front seat can be removed but as can be seen, it is not absolutely necessary.

The pilot, however is in the back seat. (He is a 1/4 scale pilot but does fit!) He can be fitted in the front seat, at a squeeze, and then the seat and pilot must be removed for battery changing.

The set could be held in with magnets rather than the screws provided, to speed up the process.

The 5000mAh 6S battery is shown. The size of the battery area is 5" wide x 2.5" high x 7.75" long. Note that these dimensions of the area, and tray and velcro etc., must be accommodated in these dimensions.

It should be noted that the power module is held in, from the front of the firewall, with screws. This gives the possibility of switching from gas to electric power and vica-versa. As far as I know, this is unique!

Bush Wheels

Some Carbon Cubs sport extra large wheels for rough terrain landing and taking off. Below are two examples of larger wheels, with links to more information. (Just click on the photo.)

The Dubro wheels are much heavier than the Kavan wheel, that weighs a scant  3.5 oz.

Review Notes

On the Horizon Hobbies site, the average of 13 reviews was 4 out of 5 stars. The manufacturing and covering were all very good and flying characteristics were excellent!

The most serious complaints were-

  • Fuel tank was too small for glow operation (It is 7.5 oz. or 230cc)
  • Door magnets were on the weak side.
  • Maybe 15 cc gas engine is not powerful enough.(But others say it is fine!)
  • There was poor packaging, for the first deliveries, resulting in some broken parts, but this has been rectified with new shipments.
  • The first edition of the manual stated the balance point at 5 7/8" to 6 1/4" from the leading edge. This was way too far back! Has since been corrected to 3 15/16" to  4 23/32" (100-120 mm)
