Micro RC Airplanes: Ultra Micro Mosquito Mk VI BNF
by Robert Bishop
There was a time, when the idea of a twin engine scale model was looked upon as a whole lot of trouble and the chances of success were slim to non-existent. Now we have a scale DH Mosquito that is also a micro RC airplane! Parkzone have done a wonderful job with this scale electric model airplane. With a wing span of 20.5" and a total finished weight of 2.6oz, this model can be flown in very light winds. Indoor RC flying does require the maximum of space, due to the quite high speed the model flies at. You will notice that the props are 3-bladed and it is interesting to note that the motors are contra-rotating. This feature ensures that there is no torque effect to contend with. The motors are 8.5mm corless brushed and the lipo battery is a 1S 250mAh 3.7V 20c unit that results in flight times of 6-7 minutes. It is possible to fit larger lipos, to increase the flying time. The batteries are accessible by removing the magnetic hatch, at the nose. One criticism I noticed, is that the hatch magnets are simply pressed into the foam. A shot of foam safe CA should fix that! The micro RC plane is a full 4-channel affair, complete with a steerable tail wheel. There are separate RC servos on each aileron and they are mounted on a common circuit board along with the RC ESC and receiver. As with most Parkzone Micro RC Airplanes, the landing gear is removable and hand launching is entirely practical. The Mosquito is quite capable of scale like RC aerobatics, so that rolls and loops or combinations of, are possible. This is a BNF model, so you will require a compatible RC transmitter, to steer your Mosquito. A Spektrum or JR, 4-channel minimum, 2.4 Ghz DSM2 type will be needed and I would use a transmitter with dual rates. As far as any complaints, I could find only a few. Some people complained about sticky wheels, which can be fixed quite easily. The biggest comment was regarding the battery charger. This is a variable rate lipo battery charger, that is 12V DC input. This means, of course that you either have to carry a 12V battery around or use a cigarette lighter adapter and your car. I think the appearance of this Ultra Micro Mosquito is just super! The camouflage paint job and the scale details are superb, so buy one and go on missions in your own park! I think she is a bit too large and fast for any backyard flying!
